Icebreaker

Describe Your Idea of Design

 Time limit: 30 minutes

Remember to use your visual timer! We recommend the inventor’s iOS and Android apps — just search for “Time Timer” in the app store.

Explanation

Before we discuss some different definitions of design in the next assignment, take some time to write down your current beliefs and feelings about what design is.

There are no right or wrong answers in this exercise. The idea is simply to allow you some space to understand the assumptions and experiences that you are bringing to your studies.

Instructions

1

Describe your idea of design

 Set your timer: 30 minutes

Take your notepad, and open up a blank two-page spread. Label the left-hand page “What design is”, and the right-hand page “What design isn’t”.

Fill each side with as many ideas as you can think of, and use more pages if you need to!

Tips

  • If you get stuck, ask someone else for their ideas, and see if they resonate with your understanding of design.
  • You could also look around your home and think about everyday objects in light of the question “what is design?”
  • Ideas can take any form. For example, you could answer with a concept (“beauty”), an object (“door handle”), or an adjective (“effortless”).

In conclusion...

Now that you’ve explored your own ideas about design, let’s dig deeper into the question of what it is, and what it’s for.
